History of National Loving Day and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
National Loving Day is an annual celebration that commemorates the United States Supreme Court’s decision in the 1967 case Loving v. Virginia. The decision struck down all state laws banning interracial marriage.
The Lovings, an interracial couple from Virginia, were arrested and imprisoned for violating the state’s ban on interracial marriage. They challenged the law, and their case eventually made its way to the Supreme Court. In a unanimous decision, the Court ruled that the Virginia law was unconstitutional, and that all laws banning interracial marriage were invalid.
Since then, National Loving Day has been celebrated every year on June 12th, the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision. The day is a reminder of the progress that has been made since the Lovings’ case, and a celebration of the growing acceptance of interracial relationships.
