Mars Incorporated created the M&M in 1941. The candy was originally designed to be a military ration for soldiers during World War II. The chocolate was coated in a hard candy shell to prevent it from melting in the hot desert climate.
After the war, Mars began selling the M&M to the general public and it quickly became a popular treat. Today, there are over 400 million M&Ms produced every day in over 55 countries around the world!
