History of National Tartan Day and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
In Canada, National Tartan Day is celebrated on April 6th. The date was chosen because it is the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath, a document in which Scottish noblemen affirmed their country’s independence from England. On National Tartan Day, Canadians of Scottish descent wear tartan to show their pride in their heritage. Many events are held across the country, including parades, Highland games, and ceilidhs (traditional Scottish dances).
National Tartan Day was first celebrated in Ottawa in 1999. Since then, it has grown in popularity and is now celebrated in cities across Canada. In some provinces, such as Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, April 6th is also a statutory holiday known as Tartan Day.
