New Caledonia Day is a national holiday in New Caledonia, a French territory in the South Pacific. It is celebrated on 24 September, the anniversary of the signing of the Matignon Accords in 1988. These accords put an end to the Kanak uprising against French rule, and led to the formation of the Nouvelle-Calédonie Territorial Congress, the territory’s current governing body.
On New Caledonia Day, flag-raising ceremonies are held at public buildings and monuments across the territory. The day also sees a number of cultural and sporting events taking place, including the Kanak Marathon, a traditional dance festival, and a rugby match between the New Caledonian national team and a team from France.
