History of New Year in Serbia and How to Celebrate/ Observe It

In Serbia, New Year’s Eve is called Sylvester and is celebrated with a big feast. The most important dish of the evening is česnica, a round loaf of bread decorated with crosses and other symbols. A coin is hidden inside the česnica and whoever finds it will have good luck in the coming year. Families gather around midnight to eat, drink and be merry. Fireworks are set off at midnight to welcome in the new year.
