Azerbaijan celebrates New Year’s Eve on December 31st. The holiday is known as “Tevrüz” in Azerbaijan. On this day, people celebrate the coming of the new year and the end of the old year. Families get together and have large meals. They also exchange gifts and visit each other’s homes.

At midnight, people go outside and shoot guns into the air. Some people set off fireworks. This is done to scare away evil spirits and to welcome in the new year. After the fireworks, people go back inside and continue celebrating. The holiday usually lasts until the early hours of the morning.
