History of New Year’s Eve in Guatemala and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
In Guatemala, New Year’s Eve is celebrated with a large feast. The feast typically includes a variety of traditional Guatemalan dishes, such as tamales, frijoles negros, and pepián. After the feast, many Guatemalans attend midnight Mass, and then stay up to watch the fireworks at midnight. Some people also burn effigies of Judas Iscariot, to represent the betrayal of Jesus Christ.
