History of President Ndadaye’s Day in Burundi and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Hervé Ndadaye, the first democratically elected president of Burundi, was assassinated on October 21, 1993, just four months after taking office. His death plunged the country into ethnic violence and civil war.
Ndadaye was a member of the Hutu ethnic group, which had long been marginalized by the ruling Tutsi minority. He ran for president on a platform of national unity and won a landslide victory in the 1992 elections.
As president, Ndadaye worked to promote reconciliation between the Hutu and Tutsi. He also took steps to improve the economic and social conditions of the Hutu majority.
On October 21, 1993, Ndadaye was killed by a group of Tutsi soldiers. The assassination triggered a wave of violence that claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.
