History of Primož Trubar Day in Slovenia and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Primož Trubar Day is a public holiday in Slovenia, commemorating the country’s most famous Protestant reformer. It is celebrated on June 8th, the day of his birth in 1508.
Trubar was born in the small village of Loka pri Zidanem Mostu in present-day Slovenia. He studied at the University of Vienna and the University of Ingolstadt, where he became interested in the ideas of the Protestant Reformation. In 1546, he returned to Slovenia and began preaching in the Slovenian language, which was then only spoken by a minority of the population.
Trubar’s main achievement was the publication of the first book in the Slovenian language, the Catechismus (1550). This was followed by a number of other religious and educational works, which helped to spread the new Protestant faith among the Slovenian people.
Trubar’s work was opposed by the Roman Catholic Church, and he was eventually arrested and imprisoned. He was released in 1562 and spent the rest of his life in exile in Germany. He died in Frankfurt in 1586.
