History of Proclamation of the Republic in Chad and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
The Proclamation of the Republic in Chad was a bloodless coup d’état that took place on August 11, 1960. It resulted in the overthrow of the President François Tombalbaye and the establishment of a military government headed by Colonel Félix Malloum. The coup was motivated by Tombalbaye’s increasingly autocratic rule and his refusal to allow any political opposition. It was also motivated by economic concerns, as Chad was one of the poorest countries in Africa and had been dependent on foreign aid for many years. The new government promised to bring about economic and political reforms and to hold elections within two years. However, these promises were not fulfilled and the country descended into a civil war that lasted for more than a decade.
