History of Republic Day in Malta and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Republic Day in Malta is celebrated on 13 December. It commemorates the day in 1974 when Malta became a republic within the Commonwealth, following a referendum held on 22 December 1974 in which 54.3% of voters were in favour of the change.
The day is marked with a military parade in Valletta, the capital city, as well as a number of other events and festivities.
In the weeks leading up to Republic Day, schools across Malta and Gozo organise various activities and events to mark the occasion. These usually include art and writing competitions, plays and concerts.
On Republic Day itself, the President of Malta takes the salute during the military parade in Valletta. This is followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial and a speech by the Prime Minister.
Other events taking place throughout the day include a flag-raising ceremony at the Palace in Valletta, a 21-gun salute and a flypast by the Maltese Air Force. In the evening, there is usually a fireworks display.
