History of Republic Day in Turkey and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Turkey celebrates Republic Day on October 29th to commemorate the founding of the Turkish Republic in 1923. The holiday is also known as Cumhuriyet Bayramı, which means “National Holiday”. On this day, schools and government offices are closed and people take to the streets to celebrate. There are parades, concerts, and other festivities held throughout the country.
The Turkish Republic was founded after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. At that time, Turkey was in a state of chaos and turmoil. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, was able to bring stability and order to the country. He also helped to modernize Turkey and to make it more democratic. Under Ataturk’s leadership, women were given the right to vote and to hold elected office. Education was made compulsory for all children. And, the Turkish alphabet was reformed to make it easier to learn and to use.
Ataturk’s vision for Turkey was to make it a modern, secular, and democratic state. He wanted Turkey to be a part of the Western world. And, he believed that Turkey could serve as a bridge between the East and the West.
