San Jose is a town located in the province of Almería, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, southern Spain. It is the capital of the municipality of the same name and has a population of approximately 24,000 inhabitants. The town is situated in the heart of the Sierra de Gádor mountain range, at an altitude of 740 metres above sea level.
San Jose was founded in 1476 by the Marquis of Cádiz, Diego Ramírez de Haro. The town’s name comes from the fact that it is located on the site of a hermitage dedicated to Saint Joseph.
The town’s economy is based primarily on agriculture and livestock farming. The main crops grown in the area are almonds, olives and grapes. San Jose is also home to a number of small industries, such as furniture making and metalworking.
The town has a number of tourist attractions, including the Church of San José, the Museum of Rural Life and the Castle of San José.
