Shamu was the first whale at SeaWorld and quickly became the park’s biggest star. He was captured in the wild off the coast of Iceland in 1965 and brought to SeaWorld in San Diego. Shamu quickly became a sensation and his shows were a huge draw for visitors.
Sadly, Shamu died in 1971 after only six years at SeaWorld. His death was a major blow to the park, but they decided to keep his memory alive by naming their new killer whale “Shamu”.
Today, there are several whales at SeaWorld parks around the world that carry the name “Shamu”. These whales continue to delight visitors with their acrobatic shows.
