In January 1992, the government of El Salvador and the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) signed a historic peace agreement, bringing an end to more than a decade of brutal civil war. The war had claimed the lives of over 75,000 people, mostly civilians, and had displaced nearly one million others.
The peace accords included a number of key provisions, such as a cease-fire, the disbanding of the FMLN’s military forces, the integration of the FMLN into the political process, and the establishment of a Truth Commission to investigate human rights abuses during the war.
