History of St. Nicholas Day and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
St. Nicholas Day is celebrated on December 6th and is a popular holiday in many European countries. The holiday is named after Saint Nicholas, a Christian saint who was known for his generosity. Saint Nicholas lived in the 4th century and was born in Patara, an area which is now part of Turkey. He later became the Bishop of Myra, a city in what is now known as Greece. Saint Nicholas was known for his kindness and love for children. He would often secretly leave gifts for them, such as coins or sweets.
The tradition of celebrating St. Nicholas Day began in the Middle Ages. On this day, people would give gifts to children, in honor of Saint Nicholas. In some countries, such as Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, children would leave their shoes out on the night of December 5th, in hopes that Saint Nicholas would fill them with treats. Today, the holiday is still celebrated in many European countries, although the traditions vary from place to place. In some countries, such as the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, children receive presents from Saint Nicholas on the morning of December 6th. In other countries, such as Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic, children receive their gifts on the evening of December 5th.
In the United States, the celebration of St. Nicholas Day is not as widespread as it is in Europe. However, there are still some Americans who celebrate the holiday. Many of them have German or Dutch ancestry and continue the traditions that they were raised with. Others simply enjoy the idea of giving and receiving gifts in the spirit of Christmas.
