Sinterklaas is a traditional Dutch holiday figure that is celebrated on December 5th. He is based on the historical Saint Nicholas, who was known for his generosity. Sinterklaas arrives in the Netherlands by steamboat from Spain each year, and is welcomed by children with songs and poems. He then proceeds to visit homes and give presents to good children, while leaving coal for naughty children. Sinterklaas Eve (December 5th) is when he is said to visit homes and deliver presents. Many children leave their shoes out overnight in hopes that Sinterklaas will fill them with candy or small gifts.
