St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Canada. It is celebrated on the 17th of March every year. The holiday commemorates the life of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.
Saint Patrick was born in the 4th century AD in Roman Britain. When he was sixteen, he was captured by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland as a slave. He escaped six years later and returned to his family. He then studied to become a priest and returned to Ireland to convert the Irish people to Christianity.
The holiday of St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated with parades, parties, and the wearing of green clothing or shamrocks. Traditional Irish foods such as corned beef and cabbage, shepherd’s pie, and Irish soda bread are often served.
