The Battle of Pichincha was fought on May 24, 1822 near Quito, Ecuador between the Royalist forces of South America and the rebel army of Simón Bolívar. The rebel victory resulted in the independence of Ecuador.
Bolívar’s army, which was made up of men from Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador, had been camped near Pichincha for several weeks, waiting for reinforcements from Peru. On May 24, the Royalists attacked the camp, hoping to catch the rebels off guard.
Despite being outnumbered, the rebels were able to defeat the Royalists and drive them out of Ecuador. This victory was a turning point in the fight for independence in South America, and it helped Bolívar gain control of much of the region.
