History of Unification Day in Bulgaria and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
In 1885, the three parts of Bulgaria – the Principality of Bulgaria, the autonomous province of Eastern Rumelia, and the district of Sofia – were unified into a single country. The day of unification, September 6, is now commemorated as Unification Day.
In the years leading up to 1885, there was growing support in Bulgaria for the idea of unification. This was driven in part by the desire to have a single, united country that could better defend itself against outside threats, and in part by the hope that a unified Bulgaria would be able to achieve greater economic prosperity.
On September 6, 1885, the Prince of Bulgaria, Alexander I, signed a decree unifying the three Bulgarian territories. This was followed by a series of other decrees and laws that established Bulgaria as a single, unified country.
Since then, September 6 has been celebrated as Unification Day. It is a national holiday in Bulgaria, and is marked with various events and activities, including parades, concerts, and historical reenactments.
