History of Vlach’s National Day (for Vlach community) in North Macedonia and How to Celebrate/ Observe It

The Vlach community in North Macedonia celebrates its National Day on August 2. This date was chosen because it coincides with the feast day of Saint Elias, the patron saint of the Vlachs.

On this day, Vlachs from all over North Macedonia gather in the capital city of Skopje to participate in various events and activities. The highlight of the National Day celebrations is a grand parade that takes place in the afternoon. During the parade, Vlach men and women dressed in traditional clothing march through the streets while singing and dancing.

After the parade, there is a large feast held in honor of Saint Elias. The feast typically includes traditional Vlach dishes such as polenta and roasted lamb. To conclude the National Day celebrations, a fireworks display is held in the evening.
