William Tubman was born on November 29, 1895, in Liberia. He was the son of a freed slave from the United States and a local woman. Tubman grew up in rural Liberia and had little formal education. He worked as a rice farmer and later as a logger.

In 1919, Tubman joined the Liberian Frontier Force, a paramilitary force that patrolled the country’s borders. He rose through the ranks and became a major general. In 1930, Tubman led a coup that overthrew the Liberian government. He became the country’s leader and ruled for 27 years.

During his rule, Tubman worked to improve Liberia’s infrastructure and economy. He also established close ties with the United States. In 1961, Tubman helped lead Liberia into the United Nations. He died in 1971.
