History of Workers’ Memorial Day in Gibraltar and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Every year on April 28, the people of Gibraltar come together to remember those who have lost their lives while working. The day is also a time to reflect on the importance of safety in the workplace and to recommit to making Gibraltar a safe place to work.
Workers’ Memorial Day was first observed in 1989, and has been held annually ever since. The day begins with a solemn ceremony at Alameda Gardens, where the names of all of Gibraltar’s fallen workers are read aloud. This is followed by a march to City Hall, where speeches are given and wreaths are laid.
The day ends with a moment of silence at midnight, when all of Gibraltar’s lights are turned off for one minute. This symbolic gesture serves as a reminder that even one death due to workplace accidents or hazards is one too many.
