History of World Children’s Day and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
World Children’s Day is celebrated on November 20th each year. The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954, and is used to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.
There are many events and activities held on World Children’s Day to engage children and help them feel empowered. In some countries, schools may hold special assemblies or events focused on children’s rights. NGOs may also organize child-friendly events such as concerts, festivals, and workshops. World Children’s Day is a great opportunity for adults to learn more about the Convention on the Rights of the Child and what they can do to support children’s rights.
Many famous people have spoken out in support of World Children’s Day over the years. In his message for World Children’s Day 2015, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said: “On World Children’s Day, let us pledge to do everything in our power to make sure all girls and boys enjoy full childhoods. They deserve nothing less.” Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and Malala Yousafzai are just some of the other high-profile advocates who have supported World Children’s Day.
So why not celebrate World Children’s Day this year? There are lots of ways to get involved. You could hold a fundraiser, write to your local representative about an issue affecting children, or simply spend some time playing with the kids in your life. Whatever you do, take the time to think about the rights of children and what we can do to make sure all kids have a bright future.
