History of World Elephant Day and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
In celebration of World Elephant Day on August 12th, we recognize and honor the magnificent creatures that roaming our planet. African and Asian elephants are both incredibly intelligent and social animals, living in tight-knit family groups led by a matriarch. These gentle giants play an important role in their ecosystems, helping to disperse seeds and keep vegetation in check.
Sadly, elephants are endangered due to habitat loss and poaching for their ivory tusks. It is estimated that 100 African elephants are killed each day for their ivory. If this trend continues, elephants could be extinct in the wild within our lifetime.
