National Preparedness Month is observed each September to promote family and community disaster and emergency planning now and throughout the year. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) leads National Preparedness Month, encouraging Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, and schools.

The theme for National Preparedness Month 2019 is “Prepared, Not Scared.” The goal is to empower Americans to prepare for and cope with emergencies in a way that reduces fear and anxiety.

FEMA offers a variety of resources to help individuals, families, and communities get prepared. These include the Ready Campaign and Ready America public service advertising campaigns, which provide tips on how to build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan. FEMA also offers free online courses on a variety of emergency preparedness topics.
