History of Worldwide Food Service Safety Month and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
In recognition of World Food Safety Day on June 7, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization is encouraging everyone to take action to prevent foodborne illnesses. One way to do this is to participate in World Food Safety Month in July.
This year’s theme is “The Role of Food Safety in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.” The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 goals adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015. They include ending poverty, protecting the planet, and ensuring prosperity for all.
Achieving these goals requires a multi-sectoral approach, and food safety is an important part of that. For example, Goal 2 aims to end hunger and all forms of malnutrition by 2030. But how can we achieve that if people are getting sick from the food they eat?
According to the World Health Organization, foodborne diseases are a leading cause of illness and death worldwide. Every year, they cause 600 million illnesses and 420,000 deaths. That’s why improving food safety is essential to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
So what can you do to help improve food safety? Start by learning about the hazards that can contaminate food and how to prevent them. Then, take action in your own community to raise awareness about food safety. You can also support efforts to strengthen food safety systems around the world.
By taking action on food safety, we can make sure that everyone has access to safe, nutritious food – one of the fundamental rights of every human being.
