The Umhlanga Reed Dance is an annual event held in Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). It is a celebration of femininity and fertility, and young unmarried girls take part in the dance. The girls, who are aged between 10 and 20, wear traditional clothing and carry reeds which they use to form a circle around the Queen Mother. They dance and sing for several days, and the event culminates in a procession to the Queen Mother’s residence, where the girls present her with the reeds.
