The Anniversary of the Arengo is a public holiday in San Marino which commemorates the first time that the country’s parliament, the Great and General Council, met in the capital city of San Marino on this day in 1295. The Arengo was originally a meeting place for the country’s noblemen, but it became the site of the Council after San Marino gained independence from the nearby Italian city-state of Rimini in 133. The Council is still the country’s legislature, and it meets in the same building as it did over 700 years ago.
On the Anniversary of the Arengo, there is a large military parade in San Marino City, followed by a speech from the Captain Regent, the head of state. The day ends with a fireworks display.
