Sobhuza II was born on 22 July 1899 at the Ludzidzini Royal Village. He was the only son of King Ngwane V and his queen, Labotsibeni Gwamile. Sobhuza’s early life was comfortable. He had many servants and was waited on hand and foot. He attended a special school for young princes in Pretoria, South Africa.
When he was just 18 years old, Sobhuza’s father died and he became king. He was crowned on 6 August 1922. As king, Sobhuza had to learn how to rule his country and make decisions that would affect the lives of his people. He also had to deal with British colonialists who were trying to control Eswatini.
Sobhuza was a very wise and fair ruler. He worked hard to improve the lives of his people. He built roads, hospitals, and schools. He also gave land to farmers and helped them get started. Sobhuza was loved and respected by his people.
In 1963, Sobhuza declared independence from Britain. This made him even more popular with his people. He ruled Eswatini for almost 61 years, making him the longest-reigning monarch in history.
Sobhuza died on 21 August 1982. He was succeeded by his son, Mswati III. The people of Eswatini mourned the loss of their beloved king. To this day, Sobhuza is remembered as a great leader and a friend to his people.
