The Corpus Christi metropolitan area is a coastal city in South Texas. It is the county seat of Nueces County and forms part of the larger Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The city’s population was estimated to be 320,434 in 2019, making it the eighth-most populous city in Texas. The Corpus Christi metropolitan area had an estimated population of 442,600 in 2019.
Corpus Christi is on the Gulf of Mexico coast, about 150 miles (240 km) southeast of San Antonio. Its strategic position along the trade routes of the Gulf of Mexico made it an important port city during the early years of Texas’ history. The city’s deepwater port handles exports of crude oil, petroleum products, chemicals, and agricultural commodities such as cotton, grain, and livestock.
