The December solstice occurs when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, which is located at 23.5 degrees south latitude. This happens every year on December 21st or 22nd. In Myanmar, the December solstice is known as the “Thingyan Akyo” and marks the beginning of the Thingyan festival. This festival is a time of cleansing and renewal, and lasts for four days. On the first day of the festival, people pour water over one another to cleanse themselves of the past year’s negativity. The next three days are spent celebrating with music, dance, and food. At the end of the festival, people make resolutions for the coming year. The December solstice is an important time for Myanmar people to come together and start fresh.
