The Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, also known as the Blessing of the Animals, is celebrated every year on October 4th. The feast commemorates the life and work of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and nature. Francis was born in Assisi, Italy in 1181. He was a rich man’s son who abandoned a life of luxury to live in poverty and preach the gospel. Francis was known for his love of all creatures, great and small. He is said to have preached to the birds and tamed a ferocious wolf. Francis died in 1226, and was canonized two years later.
The Feast of St. Francis is celebrated in many ways. In some churches, a special mass is held and animals are brought to be blessed. In others, there may be a procession of animals or a pet show.
