Independence Day in Guam commemorates the day in 1944 when US forces liberated the island from Japanese control during World War II. The holiday is celebrated with parades, festivals, and food. Guam became a US territory in 1898 and was occupied by the Japanese during WWII. On July 21, 1944, US forces began a bombing campaign of the island which lasted for two days. On the morning of July 21, 1944, US Marines landed on the beach of Agana and began to fight their way inland. By the evening of July 21, 1944, the US had control of most of the island. The next day, July 22, 1944, US troops declared the island liberated.
