History of International Firefighters’ Day and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
In many countries, International Firefighters’ Day is celebrated on May 4th. This day commemorates the anniversary of the Haymarket Riot of 1886, when Chicago firefighters marched in support of workers who were striking for an eight-hour workday. The police tried to disperse the crowd and a bomb was thrown, killing several policemen. In response, the police opened fire on the crowd, killing four workers.
This event became known as the Haymarket Massacre and it sparked a worldwide movement for worker’s rights. International Firefighters’ Day is a day to remember all of the firefighters who have died in the line of duty and to acknowledge the risks they take every day to protect us.
In many countries, firefighters are also recognized for their community service. They often visit schools to talk to kids about fire safety and they participate in charity events. Some firefighters even choose to become paramedics so that they can provide medical care to those who need it.
