History of June Solstice in China and How to Celebrate/ Observe It

The June solstice occurs when the sun is directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer. This happens once a year in late June, as the sun’s zenith reaches its northernmost point. In China, the solstice is known as “li xia” (the summer solstice). It is the day when yin and yang are in perfect balance, and symbolizes the beginning of summer. On this day, people traditionally wear red clothes and eat cooling foods such as watermelons and cucumbers.
