History of Leiria Day in Portugal and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Leiria Day is a national holiday in Portugal that commemorates the Battle of Leiria. It is celebrated on May 12th, the anniversary of the battle which took place in 1811 during the Peninsular War. The Portuguese forces, led by General Wellington, defeated the French army, led by Marshal Massena. This victory was a turning point in the war, and ultimately led to the liberation of Portugal from French occupation.
Today, Leiria Day is a day for celebrating Portuguese history and culture. There are often parades and other public events held in cities and towns across the country. In Lisbon, the capital, there is a large military parade that takes place in front of the President of Portugal and other dignitaries.
