Mali’s Martyrs’ Day is a public holiday commemorating those who have died fighting for the country. It is held on April 22nd each year. The holiday was established in 1961, after Mali gained independence from France. It is also known as National Day or Independence Day. On this day, the president of Mali delivers a speech to the nation and lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Bamako. A military parade is also held in the capital.
