History of Martyrs’ Day in Myanmar and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Martyrs’ Day is a national holiday in Myanmar, observed on July 19. It commemorates the martyrdom of General Aung San and eight of his colleagues, who were assassinated by a group of renegade soldiers on July 19, 1947. The day is also known as National Day of Remembrance.
Aung San was a revolutionary leader who fought for Myanmar’s independence from British colonial rule. He was also the architect of the country’s post-independence Constitution. The eight others who were killed with him were all members of his cabinet. Their deaths plunged the country into turmoil and ushered in a period of military rule.
Martyrs’ Day is observed with solemn ceremonies and speeches by government officials. It is also a time for the people of Myanmar to reflect on the sacrifices made by their country’s heroes.
