May Day is a public holiday in Gibraltar which is celebrated on the first of May. The holiday commemorates the international labour movement and the workers’ rights movement. In Gibraltar, the holiday is also known as Labour Day.

May Day was originally chosen as a day to celebrate workers’ rights because it coincided with the anniversary of the Haymarket affair in Chicago. The Haymarket affair was a protest turned violent that resulted in the death of four workers.
