History of Our Lady of Graces in Portugal and How to Celebrate/ Observe It

The Lady of Graces is a Marian apparition that allegedly occurred in Portugal in 1497. A young boy named Martinho da Cruz claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary while he was out collecting firewood. She reportedly appeared to him on a tree stump and asked him to build a chapel in her honor.

The boy told his father about the apparition and, with the help of the local community, a small chapel was built on the site. Over the years, the chapel became a popular pilgrimage site and it was eventually expanded into a larger church.

The Lady of Graces is now one of the most important Marian shrines in Portugal. Thousands of pilgrims visit the church each year to pray for healing and miracles. The shrine is also said to be a place of protection from storms and shipwrecks.
