History of Please Take My Children to Work Day and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
In 1993, the Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Foundation launched the first ever “Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day.” The event was created to provide girls and boys with an opportunity to explore different careers, learn about what working adults do all day, and gain a better understanding of how their parents’ work affects the family.
Since its inception, over 37 million children have participated in the program. In 2010, the Foundation expanded the event to include all children, regardless of gender, and renamed it “Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day.”
The event is typically held on the fourth Thursday in April. Families can register for the event through the Foundation’s website. Once registered, families will receive a kit that includes activities and resources to help them plan their day.
On the day of the event, children will shadow their parents or another adult mentor at their place of work. They will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities, meet other employees, and learn about the different aspects of their parent’s job.
At the end of the day, families can come together to reflect on their experiences and discuss what they learned. The Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Foundation also offers an online post-event activity guide to help families continue the conversation about careers and work-life balance at home.
