History of Shemini Atzeret in United Kingdom and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Shemini Atzeret is a Jewish holiday that occurs on the 22nd day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei. It is considered to be the eighth and final day of the Sukkot festival, although in Israel it is celebrated as a separate holiday. The name “Shemini Atzeret” literally means “the eighth [day] of assembly.”
This holiday is marked by special prayers and readings from the Torah. In addition, many Jews observe the custom of making a pilgrimage to the graves of loved ones on this day.
In Israel, Shemini Atzeret is also known as Simchat Torah, or the “Joy of the Torah.” On this day, the annual cycle of reading the Torah is completed, and the first section of the Torah is read aloud once again. This is followed by a festive procession around the synagogue with the Torah scrolls.
