St. George’s Day is a national holiday in Bulgaria, celebrated on May 6th. It commemorates the patron saint of the country, Saint George, and also celebrates the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in 1878. On this day, Bulgarians traditionally wear red and white clothes and eat traditional dishes such as banitsa (a cheese pastry) and kiselo mlyako (a yogurt drink).
