Saint Olaf was the King of Norway who introduced Christianity to the Faroe Islands in the year 1000. He was killed during a battle in present-day Russia.
The day is celebrated with church services, parades, and other festivities. In the evening, there is usually a large bonfire. The day is also a national holiday in Norway.
