History of Susan B. Anthony’s Birthday in United States and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Susan B. Anthony was born on February 15, 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts. She was the second oldest of seven children. Her family was Quaker and very involved in social reform movements. Anthony’s education was cut short when she was only sixteen due to financial difficulties in her family. Despite this, she was an avid reader and self-educated herself on a variety of topics.
In 1839, Anthony began teaching at a Quaker boarding school in New York. It was there that she met Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who would become her lifelong friend and collaborator. The two women soon became involved in the women’s rights movement. In 1848, they attended the Seneca Falls Convention, which is considered to be the first women’s rights convention.
Anthony and Stanton continued to work together for the next several decades, fighting for women’s suffrage and other women’s rights. They founded the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1869. Anthony also played a major role in the temperance movement. She died in 1906, fourteen years before the passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote.
