History of Virgin of Caacupé Day in Paraguay and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
The Virgin of Caacupé is a Marian apparition that is said to have occurred in the town of Caacupé, Paraguay on December 8, 1630. The story goes that a young boy named Juan Diego was out gathering firewood when he saw a shining light in the forest. As he approached, he saw the Virgin Mary standing atop a hill. She asked him to go to the town and tell the people to build a church in her honor.
Juan Diego did as he was asked and went to the town square to find the priest. However, the priest did not believe him and told him to go away. Juan Diego went back to the forest, but the Virgin appeared to him again and told him to try again. This time, Juan Diego was able to convince the priest and a church was built in honor of the Virgin of Caacupé.
Every year on December 8, the people of Paraguay celebrate the Virgin of Caacupé Day. There is a large procession through the streets and a mass is held at the church. Many people also visit the shrine of the Virgin of Caacupé, which is located just outside of the city.
