History of Candlemas in Mexico and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Candlemas is a Christian holiday that falls on February 2nd. It celebrates the presentation of Jesus at the Temple and is also known as the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary.
In Mexico, Candlemas is known as “Dia de la Candelaria” and is celebrated with a variety of traditions. One popular tradition is the making of “candelas” which are large candles that are decorated with ribbons and flowers. These candles are then carried in procession to a church where they are blessed.
Another tradition is the baking of special cakes or pastries called “roscas de Reyes” which are round and have a hole in the center. A small figurine of the baby Jesus is hidden inside the cake and whoever finds it is said to have good luck for the year.
On Candlemas Eve, it is customary to eat a dish called “menudo” which is a soup made with tripe (beef stomach). This dish is thought to bring good luck and fortune for the coming year.
