The Battle of San Jacinto was fought on April 18, 1856, during the Nicaragua Campaign of 1855–56 in the American Civil War. A force of 2,500 men, led by future president William Walker, attacked a Nicaraguan fort in the town of San Jacinto, in an attempt to overthrow the government. The Nicaraguan forces, composed of soldiers and armed civilians, were able to repel the invaders, and Walker and his men were forced to retreat.
