History of Fourth Advent Sunday in Germany and How to Celebrate/ Observe It
Fourth Advent Sunday is the last Sunday before Christmas in Germany. It is also known as Heiliger Abend, or “Holy Evening.” On this day, Germans traditionally light the fourth and final candle on their Adventskranz, or Advent wreath. This special wreath is made of evergreen branches and usually has four candles, each representing one of the Sundays of Advent.
On Heiliger Abend, families gather together to enjoy a festive meal and exchange gifts. Many German children also attend a Christmas Eve service at church. The evening ends with a midnight mass, which is often followed by a festive breakfast on Christmas morning.
